May 25th, 2009il est cinq heures, paris s’éveille
Many of the readers of this blog will immediately start to whistle to the tune of French chansonnier Jacques Dutronc’s hit when reading the title of this post (translated: it’s five o’clock, Paris awakens). Last Saturday I too woke up at five to shoot awakening Paris and from the stark beauty of the city that sparkles in the first rays of sun to the sidewalk cafés getting ready for business, from the lone man sitting contemplating in an empty square to the young and frivolous adolescents who are finally admitting the night has come to an end: it’s spectacular. Expect more of it in the weeks to come and in the regional Dutch newspapers, accompanying a story of friend and journalist Olivier van Beemen, sometime this summer.

Wow, great idea! I’ve done that in other big cities: watching the city waken up. As a tourist you never see the early workers go to their offices or companies, metrotrains and busses full of people. And with the Dutronc-soundtrack in Paris it’s even more special.
People who are familiar with your work know how you are able to paint with colour and atmosfere, so looking forward to more examples!
That looks very promising. Looking forward to seeing more soon….
Francois, I can definitely recommend doing this when you’re here next time. The only problem this time of year is: twilight starts at 05:15, by 6 the sun’s up and by 7:30 the “magic light” is gone – but that’s only a problem from a photographer’s point of view I guess.
Never a problem with magic light with a Canon Ixus 75:-). I wouldnt even try to make any pictures. That’s what photographers are for. Looking foward for more, including the summerstory by OvB.
